The political-administrative structure in Brazil is divided into states, counties and districts. In the Federal District, where the country's capital is, there are the headquarters of the federal government and its powers (executive, legislative and judicial).

The 26 states and the Federal District, also called Units of the Federation, have the highest hierarchy in the political and administrative organization of the country. A State's capital is home to a state seat of government. The municipalities, which have the lowest hierarchy in the political and administrative organization, have their government based in the City Hall. Finally, the districts are administrative units of municipalities.
